Lightroom alternative · Windows & macOS

A Lightroom alternative
you can own.

Chromogen is a standalone RAW editor built around film emulation. It covers the developing, library and export you use every day, adds a real darkroom, and sells for a one-time price. Here is the honest comparison: what it covers, what it adds, and what it does not do.

Covered

What you use Lightroom for, Chromogen does too.

  • RAW developing. 16-bit RAW from the major camera makers, developed scene-linear with highlight reconstruction. JPEG and TIFF too.
  • A library. Your folders are the catalog: culling loupe, star ratings, Pick and Reject flags, collections, filters and saved views.
  • Lens correction. Over 1,500 lens profiles built in; the lens named in the photo's EXIF is corrected for distortion, colour fringing and vignetting.
  • Local adjustments. Brush, gradient, radial and luma masks, on-device AI Subject and click-to-select Object masks, dodge and burn.
  • Colour tools. Three-way wheels with lift, gamma and gain, a multi-band colour mixer, curves, Colour Unify, and waveform, parade, vectorscope and histogram scopes.
  • Export. Batch export with saved presets and ICC colour management, plus print-ready output with paper sizes, bleed, crop marks, PDF and soft proofing.
  • Non-destructive. Edits live in a sidecar file beside each photo; the original is never modified. Copy an edit onto one photo or a whole shoot.
Added

What Lightroom does not have, and Chromogen is built around.

  • 13 film stocks, 36 looks. Each measured from a reference target shot on real film and read on lab scanners, then rebuilt as characteristic curves and dye-layer colour.
  • Film that responds to exposure. A preset freezes one exposure; a Chromogen stock is the film measured at every stop. Shot Exposure re-creates under- and over-exposed film, and Development runs from Pull 2 to Push 3.
  • Grain and halation done physically. Grain rendered as optical density, halation in linear light, acutance without digital halos.
  • The rest of the darkroom. Instant-film prints, light leaks, lab-scan film frames, a Digicam look, invert and solarize, a Print Room.
  • Auto Develop and the Roll pass. A metered starting point, and a whole shoot treated consistently.
  • The lab around it. A Retouch workspace, moodboard, mockups, carousels and contact sheets, Book Studio, a text auto-designer.
Not here

What Chromogen does not do, so you can decide fast.

  • No cloud, no phone app. It is a desktop application. Photos are processed on your computer and never uploaded.
  • No catalog import. It does not open a Lightroom catalog file. Point it at your folders instead; your Lightroom edits stay in Lightroom.
  • Not a plugin. It does not run inside Lightroom. It opens from Lightroom Classic as an external editor, and Save & Return writes the file back.
  • No video. Photographs only.
  • No negative scanning. The Invert effect turns a photo into a negative look; it does not convert scanned film.

Bring your presets

Your presets come with you.
So does your workflow.

Lightroom presets (.xmp and .lrtemplate), Capture One styles (.costyle), ICC profiles and .cube LUTs import as native looks, each with an amount dial, so a preset you have used for years can sit under a measured film stock at any strength. Not ready to leave Lightroom Classic or Capture One? Set Chromogen as an external editor (“Edit in”, or “Open With”), develop the photo, and Save & Return writes it straight back into the catalog. From Chromogen's own Library you can send a photo to Lightroom, Capture One or Photoshop.

Switching questions

Before you leave Lightroom,
the practical bits.

Can Chromogen open my Lightroom catalog?

No. Chromogen does not read a Lightroom catalog file. Point it at the folders your photos already live in and those folders are the catalog, so there is no catalog database to import or to corrupt. Your Lightroom edits stay in Lightroom; export the finished files from there if you want them alongside.

Can I keep using my Lightroom presets?

Yes. Lightroom presets (.xmp and .lrtemplate), Capture One styles (.costyle), ICC profiles and .cube LUTs import as native looks, each with an amount dial, so a preset can sit under a film stock at any strength.

Does Chromogen replace Lightroom Classic or work alongside it?

Either. On its own it covers RAW developing, a library with culling and ratings, lens correction, local masks and batch export. Alongside Lightroom Classic or Capture One it opens as an external editor (“Edit in”, or “Open With”) and Save & Return writes the developed file straight back into the catalog.

Is there a mobile or cloud version?

No. Chromogen is a desktop application for Windows 10 and 11 and macOS 11 or later, native on Apple Silicon and Intel. Photos are processed on your computer and are not uploaded; only the licence is checked online when the app launches.

Is it a subscription, or do I pay once?

Your choice. Monthly is $29, annual is $228, and a lifetime licence is $498 paid once with every future update included. One licence activates both the Windows and the macOS app, on one computer at a time.
